Ok, so my first attempt at a book club is not going so hot. I made one post about the prologue and first chapter over a week ago and haven’t touched the book since then. In my defense, May is a stressful month for teachers. Nevertheless, I made it through! And I’m finally back with an update!
While I was planning to post for each chapter, I didn’t have it in me to stop reading. So now here I am, halfway through the book, forcing myself to write some of my thoughts down before I continue.
In my last post, I noted the author’s ability to engage the senses. To my delight, the rest of the book so far has followed suit! The onslaught of descriptive language in Ford’s writing makes for an ideal reading experience. It makes me feel like I’m on The Great British Baking Show and I’m here for it!
I mentioned in my first post an ominous feeling in the prologue that made me wonder what exactly Jenny faced in her past that was showing up in the present. I’ve finally reached the point in the story where it is revealed and I’ll say I definitely didn’t see that coming. My heart goes out to Bernard who’s been in the dark for 60 years!
I hope nothing happens to him when he finds out, but I have a bad feeling about it. The author has been painting his deteriorating form too well for the last hundred pages. I wonder if she’ll do something unexpected though and turn it on Jenny.
That’s it for now. I’m excited to learn the full truth behind Jenny’s secret, but in the meantime, I need to find me a treat. All of Jenny’s bakes so far have left my sweet tooth craving!
Let me know if you’re reading along in the comments and if you have any suggestions for another book!
