READ WITH ME – Mrs. Quinn’s Rise to Fame – The Zealous Book Club

Forgive me if I’m doing this all wrong because I’ve never been in a book club before (you wouldn’t count being one of a huge group of 8th grade girls obsessed over Twilight, would you?), but this is my attempt at one!

Since this is my year of doing things that bring me joy, I decided that I would finally make my book club dream happen. I’m hoping that someone out there is interested in sharing thoughts, ideas, questions, or even frustrations with me as we read!

This isn’t a book review in any sense, so I can’t even tell you if it’s worth a buy, but if you’re looking for a book buddy like I am, you can purchase the book here through my Amazon link and read with me! If you don’t have the book or haven’t started it yet, BEWARE OF SPOILERS!

Prologue & Chapter 1 – Olivia Ford’s Mrs. Quinn’s Rise to Fame

The only way I can describe the prologue is delicious! The sensory overload conjured at the beginning of the book is one of the most profound I’ve experienced as a reader. I can only imagine the mouth-watering imagery the author will continue to cook up throughout the rest of the story.

The tone of the prologue shifts from discomfort to familiarity and nostalgia to anxiety and then to hope. I wonder what has thrown the heroine into such disarray, but the 60 year time jump in chapter 1 makes me think she got over it well enough.

I don’t think I’ve read a book with a 77 year-old heroine before, so I’m excited! The author has already done a good job of painting what I imagine life to look like at that age. It even has me wanting to check on my parents who are not yet there but are getting pretty close.

Jenny and Bernard a beautiful couple who’ve grown old together – they’re as sweet as the desserts that have been described so far. I love that they have their own interests but they are still so aware of and supportive of each other.

I’m a little confused about the ending of the chapter. Is there a significance about that date, something that reminds Jenny of the anxiety mentioned in the prologue? Was there something that happened in the past that could be dredged up after all these years?

Let me know what you think! (UPDATE)
